For another Peel-session Robert changes the lyrics of 'Grinding Halt' to a parody of Paul Morley's article in NME - the song is known as 'Desperate Journalist'. At the end of June 'Boys Don't Cry' / 'Plastic Passion' is released as the second single. While the band is touring permanently, Smith starts two other projects: with Ric Gallup he founds the label 'Dance Fools Dance' and releases 100 records of The Obtainer's 'Yeah Yeah Yeah' on one side, and Simon Gallup's band 'The Magspies' on the other. With his sister Janet, Lol, Simon and the postman Frank Bell as the singer they record the songs 'I'm A Cult Hero' and 'I Dig You', released with the name 'Cult Hero'. At this time Robert's relationship to Michael Dempsey gets more and more tense.

During the tour with Siouxsie & The Banshees Robert becomes the replacement of their guitarist. While visiting The Cure in the studio, Siouxsie sings the backing vocals on 'I'm Cold' - this song is released on november 3rd as the b-side of 'Jumping Someone Else's Train'. Within one week, Smith records 6 new songs, whose lyrics did arise during the tour, when robert sat depressed in his room for 8 hours. Lol likes it, but Michael can't get something out of this kind of music. Simon Gallup is enthusiastic, so Robert asks him to play bass guitar instead of Michael. Simon brings Matthieu Hartley with him, who played keyboard with The Magspies.
Bei der Tour mit Siouxsie & The Banshees ist er aber noch dabei, und Robert springt gleichzeitig bei den Banshees als Gitarrist ein. Während eines Besuchs im Studio singt Siouxsie die backing vocals von 'I'm Cold' - der Song erscheint am 3. November als B-Seite von 'Jumping Someone Else's Train'. Innerhalb einer Woche nimmt Smith 6 neue Songs auf, deren Texte während der Tour entstanden - als er 8 Stunden lang deprimiert auf seinem Zimmer saß. Lol ist begeistert, doch Michael kann der Musik nichts abgewinnen. Auch Simon ist enthusiastisch, deshalb fragt Robert ihn, ob er statt Michael den Bass spielen will. Simon bringt Matthieu Hartley mit, der Keyboarder bei den Magspies war.
