At the Glastonbury Festival on June 23rd, Cure plays for the first time 'Never Enough', which has been recorded at the Farmyard Studios in the same year. Some festivals later, on September 1st, the citizens of London experience something very special: The Cure pirate radio on FM 102! Due to problems with the transmitter, the operation doesn't begin before the late evening, but who stays awake is rewarded with remixes of the still unreleased 'Mixed Up'. The american DJs Mike Halloran and Lewis Largent share the studio with the bandmembers, who answer questions asked by listeners and present their favourite bands. Two weeks later, 'Never Enough' / 'Harold & Joe' is released with a brilliant video by Tim Pope. He's probably the only one who had fun making the video - Robert explains it to the journalist Jim Shelley, while he's hanging upside down five meters above a pool filled with smashed mirrors: "The problem is that one can't look uncomfortable without feeling the same..."

September, wartet auf die Einwohner Londons etwas besonders außergewöhnliches: The Cure pirate radio auf FM 102! Wegen gestörter Verbindung zum Sender beginnt die Aktion erst spät abends - doch wer diese Nacht durchwacht, wird mit den Remixen der noch unveröffentlichten 'Mixed Up' belohnt. Die amerikanischen DJs Mike Halloran und Lewis Largent teilen sich das Studio mit der Band, die Hörerfragen beantwortet und ihre Lieblingsbands präsentieren. Zwei Wochen später erscheint 'Never Enough' / 'Harold & Joe' mit brilliantem Tim Pope-Video. Dieser ist wohl der einzige, der dabei Spaß hat - Robert erklärt es dem Journalisten Jim Shelley, während er an den Füßen hängend 5 Meter über einem mit zertrümmerten Spiegeln gefüllten Pool schwebt: "Das Problem ist, daß man nicht unbehaglich aussehen kann, ohne sich so zu fühlen..."
For the jubilee-compilation 'Rubaiyat' of their american label Elektra, Cure covers 'Hello, I Love You' by The Doors. Shortly after the first Cure-remix is published: 'Close To Me /' 'Just Like Heaven'. Robert insists on a new video as sequel - because the first part ends with a wardrobe with the band inside falling down from a cliff, this one plays under water.
Für die Jubiläumscompilation 'Rubaiyat' ihres amerikanischen Labels Elektra covert Cure 'Hello, I Love You' von den Doors. Kurz darauf erscheint der erste Cure-Remix: 'Close To Me /' 'Just Like Heaven'. Robert besteht auf einem neuen Video als Fortsetzung - da der erste Teil damit endet, daß die Band in einem Schrank von der Klippe fällt, spielt dieser unter Wasser.
At the beginning of November 'Mixed Up' is released - although destined to make old singles available to fans all at once, the remixes provoke outrage especially within old fans. At christmas it rains awards: best live-act, best singer, and 'Never Enough' as best video!
Anfang November wird 'Mixed Up' veröffentlicht - obwohl dazu gedacht, den Fans den Erwerb alter Singles auf einen Schlag zu ermöglichen, lösen die Remixe gerade bei alten Fans Empörung aus. Zu Weihnachten hagelt es Auszeichnungen: bester Live-Act, bester Sänger und 'Never Enough' als bestes Video!

The appearance at the Great British Music Weekend in the Wembley Arena is filmed for the Brit-Awards, which settle The Cure as the best british band. On march 1st, MTV shows a very special Cure-Unplugged session: with toy-piano, xylophone etc. at candlelight and joss-sticks! Four weeks later, 'Entreat' with some songs of the 89s Wembley-appearances is finally regularly published, after HMV gave away the limited edition to buyers of two or more Cure albums in the year before. In July appear the second video-collection 'Picture Show' and the CD-box 'Assemblage', including all released albums.
Der Auftritt beim Great British Music Weekend in der Wembley Arena wird für die Brit-Awards gefilmt, die The Cure als beste englische Band verläßt. Am 1. März überträgt MTV eine ganz besondere Cure-Unplugged-Session: mit Spielzeugklavier, Xylophon u. ä. bei Kerzenschein und Räucherstäbchen! Vier Wochen später erscheint 'Entreat' mit einigen Songs der 89er Wembley-Auftritte endlich regulär, nachdem HMV die limitierte Ausgabe im letzten Jahr bei Kauf von zwei oder mehr Cure-Alben verschenkte. Im Juli gibt es die zweite Video-Collection 'Picture Show' und die CD-Box 'Assemblage', die alle bisherigen Alben enthält.
But at the same time new problems are arising: Lol threatens with legal proceedings to get more money. Robert is sure that Lol will lose, und tells the Select magazine that Lol has always been musically incompetent: "For 'Let's Go To Bed' he tried for three studio-days to play drums, till we finally hired a drummer!"
Doch gleichzeitig zieht neuer Ärger auf: Lol droht mit einem Gerichtsverfahren, um mehr Geld zu bekommen. Robert ist sich sicher, daß Lol verlieren wird, und verrät dem Select-Magazin, daß dieser musikalisch schon immer unfähig war: "Bei 'Let's Go To Bed' versuchte er drei Studio-Tage lang, das Schlagzeug zu spielen, bis wir schließlich einen Drummer einstellten!"
In August, The Cure hide in Studio for a new album, and don't reappear till in November 'Play Out' is published, a video with live material (of the G.B. Music Weekend and a secret gig in the Town And Country Club from January 17th) and insights in The Cure's backstage life. Although Cure didn't publish anything new for two years, for the Melody Maker Robert still is the best singer, and 'Picture Show' the best video. In the newest release of Debrett's who's who Robert names his hobbies as "deep sea diving, hot-air ballooning, reading, writing and staring in space"... does he tell the truth this time?
Im August verschwinden The Cure für ein neues Album im Studio und tauchen nicht wieder auf, bis im November 'Play Out' erscheint, ein Video mit Live-Material (vom G.B.-Music Weekend und einem geheimen Gig im Town And Country Club am 17. Januar) und Einblicken in The Cure's Backstage-Leben. Obwohl Cure seit zwei Jahren nichts neues veröffentlicht hat, bleibt Robert für den Melody Maker der beste Sänger, und 'Picture Show' das beste Video. In der neuesten Ausgabe von Debrett's who's who gibt Robert seine Hobbies als "Tiefseetauchen, Heißluftballonfahren, lesen, schreiben und in den Weltraum starren" an... ob er diesmal die Wahrheit sagt?
