Mary's dream of death in a pool and Robert's, to eat someone, merge to 'Kyoto Song', which was originally named 'Koto Song', like an instrument Robert wasn't able to play... 'Close To Me' deals with senseless days, on which one plans to fill the next day with sensible things - but that one and all afterwards are exactly like the one before...
Im Frühling beginnen die Aufnahmen eines neuen Albums in den Angel Studios mit Billiard, Bier, Videos - ein herrliches Fest! Marys Traum vom Tod im Swimmingpool und Roberts, jemanden aufzuessen, verschmelzen zu 'Kyoto Song', der eigentlich 'Koto Song' heißt - nach einem Instrument, das Robert nicht spielen kann... 'Close To Me' handelt von sinnlosen Tagen, an denen man sich vornimmt, den nächsten mit sinnvollen Dingen zu füllen - doch dieser und alle danach sind genau wie der zuvor...
Now that The Cure are accepted in the charts, the press is more and more interested in Robert's private life. But he likes lying, and tells different stories everytime, for that no-one will take him serious. In June the first concert of the new line up takes place in Barcelona, followed by gigs in Italy and Athens. About Cure's growing popularity Robert declares, that it doesn't matter to him, how many people are listening - 'cause he can only see the first row, due to his short-sightedness! In Juli 'In Between Days' / 'The Exploding Boy' / 'A Few Hours After This' is released. The exploding boy is Robert himself: I drink too much, eat too much, think too much... ha! I'd love to explode. It would be a wonderful death!
Nun, da The Cure in den Charts akzeptiert ist, interessiert sich die Presse zunehmend für Roberts Privatleben. Doch er lügt gern, erzählt jedesmal etwas anderes, damit ihn niemand ernst nimmt. Im Juni findet das erste Konzert der neuen Besetzung in Barcelona statt, gefolgt von Gigs in Italien und Athen. Zu Cures wachsender Popularität erklärt Robert, daß es ihm egal ist, vor wievielen Leuten er spielt - da er wegen seiner Kurzsichtigkeit ohnehin nur die erste Reihe erkennt! Im Juli wird 'In Between Days' / 'The Exploding Boy' / 'A Few Hours After This' veröffentlicht. Der explodierende Junge ist Robert selbst: Ich trinke zu viel, esse zu viel, denke zu viel... ha! Ich würde gerne explodieren. Es wäre ein wundervoller Tod!
At the end of August the album is published; the title has two origins out of Robert's childhood: When his parents played for him with puppets painted on their fingers, those have been decapitated by laying the heads on poles: 'The Head On The Pole' - and everytime before he got sick, he dreamed of a terrible man above his bedroom-door: 'The Head On The Door'. Robert threatens to dissolve the band, should they ever have a Top1-Hit. The No.1-magazine he tells, that his favourite record is 'I'm A Moody Guy' by Shane Fenton, although he never listened to it. Simon threw it in two parts into his mailbox, 'cause he calls him a moody bastard! With 'Close To Me' / 'A Man Inside My Mouth' / 'New Day' / 'Stop Dead' it's the first time that two singles are taken from the same album, and since then Cure-concerts overcrowd even the Wembley-Arena. The year ends with some concerts in America and France, where in the meantime they got popular enough for appearances in TV.
Ende August erscheint das Album, dessen Titel zwei Ursprünge aus Roberts Kindheit hat: Wenn die Eltern mit auf die Finger gemalten Puppen spielen, werden diese geköpft, indem die Köpfe auf Spieße gelegt werden: 'The Head On The Pole' - und immer bevor er krank wurde, träumte er von einem schrecklichen Mann über der Schlafzimmertür: 'The Head On The Door'. Robert droht damit, die Band aufzulösen, sollte sie je einen Top1-Hit landen. Dem No.1-Magazin erzählt er außerdem, daß seine Lieblingsplatte 'I'm A Moody Guy' von Shane Fenton ist, obwohl er sie noch nie gehört hat. Simon warf sie ihm halbiert in den Briefkasten, weil er ihn als launischen Bastard bezeichnet! Mit 'Close To Me' / 'A Man Inside My Mouth' / 'New Day' / 'Stop Dead' wird zum ersten Mal eine zweite Single aus einem Album ausgekoppelt, und mittlerweile überfüllen Cure-Konzerte sogar die Wembley-Arena. Das Jahr endet mit einigen Konzerten in Amerika und Frankreich, wo sie inzwischen berühmt genug für Fernseh-Auftritte sind.
