While The Cure in Ireland are preparing for the south america tour, Pope lets them dance in animal costumes for the 'Why Can't I Be You?'-video. "That's it! The video I always wanted to do. The Cure are dancing! I can't believe what I see. They're at the end!" Before 'Why Can't I Be You?' / 'A Japanese Dream' is released, they go for Buenos Aires, where the Football-Stadium isn't big enough for 40,000 fans on two evenings, and for eight similar shows in Brazil. On April 23th the premiere of the 'Orange'-movie takes place in the Odeon, Marble Arch, and with a series of tv-appearances 'Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me' is introduced.
Während Cure sich in Irland auf die erste Südamerika-Tour vorbereitet, läßt Pope sie für das 'Why Can't I Be You?'-Video in Tierkostümen tanzen. "Das ist es! Das Video, das ich immer machen wollte. The Cure tanzt! Ich kann nicht glauben, was ich sehe. Sie sind am Ende!" Bevor 'Why Can't I Be You?' / 'A Japanese Dream' erscheint, geht es nach Buenos Aires, wo das Football-Stadion für 40.000 Fans an zwei Abenden nicht ausreicht, und zu acht ähnlich wilden Shows in Brasilien. Am 23. April findet im Odeon, Marble Arch, die Premiere des 'Orange'-Films statt, und mit einer Reihe von Fernsehauftritten wird 'Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me' eingeläutet.
The album begins with the bitter song 'The Kiss', while Porl's demanding 'Fight' as the most untypical Cure-song forms the end. Smith describes it as more realistic than 'Head On The Door', which appeares very constructed in his eyes. His inordinately large lips on the cover symbolize the desire to swallow people. "The idea, to prefer to drown them, instead of kissing them." The summer passes by with the singles 'Catch' / 'Breathe' / 'A Chain Of Flowers' and 'Just Like Heaven' / 'Snow In Summer' / 'Sugar Girl'. The 'Heaven'-video is filmed at the Beachy Head, where Robert and Mary have already been 15 years before - "Such a night is worth thousand hours of grind!" In October they are six who go on tour, 'cause Roger O'Donnell of the Psychedelic Furs is employed as second keyboard-player. At the end of the year 'Ten Imaginary Years' is published, the official Cure-biography by Robert Smith, Steve Sutherland and Lydie Barbarian.

Im Oktober geht es zu sechst auf Tour, da Roger O'Donnell von den Psychedelic Furs als zweiter Keyboarder eingestellt wird. 'Hot Hot Hot!!!' / 'Hey You!!!' gets rapturous critics, but Pope's brilliant video with the nickname 'dwarfs with sunglasses' isn't played much. The song is based on Robert's sexual experiences (in the cellar of a club, on a ferry and in his bedroom) and on the children's book 'Earthfast' by William Mayne (about a boy who's hit by lightning). 2 of the 8 millions sold albums go on the account of 'Kiss Me', but Robert hates the Top Ten: "I'd rather hang myself than being like the people in the Top Ten!"
'Hot Hot Hot!!!' / 'Hey You!!!' bekommt schwärmerische Kritiken, doch Pope's brilliantes Video mit dem Spitznamen 'Zwerge mit Sonnenbrillen' wird kaum gespielt. Der Song basiert auf sexuellen Erfahrungen Roberts (im Keller eines Clubs, auf einer Fähre und in seinem Schlafzimmer) und dem Kinderbuch 'Earthfast' von William Mayne (über einen Jungen, der vom Blitz getroffen wird). Von den bis dahin verkauften 8 Millionen Alben gehen 2 Millionen auf das Konto von 'Kiss Me', doch Robert haßt die Top Ten: "Ich würde mich lieber aufhängen, als wie die Leute in den Top Ten zu sein!"
On August 13th 1988 it happens: Mary and Robert, being together since their school-time, marry! The happening is so secret, that this time neither press nor fans know anything. The whole band is there, Simon as witness. On the question for children, Rob replies: "I thought about it from time to time, but it's too much responsibility - I'm too unsettled to be a father."
Am 13. August 1988 ist es soweit: Mary und Robert, die seit ihrer Schulzeit zusammen sind, heiraten! Das Ereignis wird so geheimgehalten, daß diesmal weder Presse noch Fans etwas mitbekommen. Die ganze Band ist dabei, Simon als Trauzeuge. Auf die Frage nach Kindern antwortet Rob: "Ich habe von Zeit zu Zeit darüber nachgedacht, aber es ist zu viel Verantwortung - ich bin zu unstet, um Vater zu sein."
The couple moves to a house at the coast, where Robert revives his paternal streak. He admits that he likes cooking - but not for many people: "It's really senseless - to cook all that, and then someone else eats it away..."
Das Paar zieht in ein Haus an der Küste, wo Robert seine väterliche Ader wieder aufleben läßt. Er gibt zu, daß er gerne kocht - aber nicht für viele Leute: "Es ist wirklich sinnlos - das alles zu kochen, und dann ißt es jemand anderes weg..."
