During the spring, Robert has three jobs at once: the Banshees-album 'Hyaena' is finally being finished, Tim Pope's single 'I Want To Be A Tree' is being recorded, and with The Cure he meets in studio for the album 'The Top'. Each song is related to specific influences: 'Bird Mad Girl' p.e. deals with a mentally ill girl, 'Dressing Up' with Robert's feelings before he enters the stage, and 'The Empty World' is a retrospective view on 'Charlotte Sometimes' and Simon (how proud both of them have been).
Während des Frühlings ist Robert gleich dreifach beschäftigt: das Banshees-Album 'Hyaena' wird endlich fertiggestellt, Tim Pope's Single 'I Want To Be A Tree' wird eingespielt, und mit The Cure geht er für das Album 'The Top' ins Studio. Jeder Song bezieht sich auf bestimmte Einflüsse: 'Bird Mad Girl' z.B. handelt von einem geisteskranken Mädchen, 'Dressing Up' von Roberts Gefühlen vor einem Auftritt; 'The Empty World' ist ein Rückblick auf 'Charlotte Sometimes' und Simon (wie stolz die beiden waren).
Because Thornally works as sound engineer for Duran Duran in Australia, Robert composes and plays the bass parts. For the first time a cure-album has a deadline, 'cause Robert needs time for working with the Banshees - that's why he isn't satisfied with some parts. When Porl Thompson drops in with his cover-design, he's offered to play saxophone in 'Give Me It', and even stays as the 5th band-member. In march they release the single 'The Caterpillar' / 'Happy The Man' / 'Throw Your Foot' and the video, for which Pope wasn't able to get hold of butterflies - there were only caterpillars at that time. The Cure tours through england and the continent for two months, and Robert terminates his job at the Banshees. His doctor even prescribes him to take a course of treatment, which he passes with Mary in Wales.
Weil Thornally als Duran Duran's Toningenieur in Australien ist, komponiert und spielt Robert die Bassteile. Zum ersten Mal muß ein Cure-Album zu einem bestimmten Datum fertig sein, damit die Banshees nicht zu kurz kommen - dadurch ist Smith mit einigen Stellen unzufrieden. Als Porl Thompson den Coverentwurf vorbeibringt, bekommt er das Angebot, das Saxophon in 'Give Me It' zu spielen und bleibt gleich als 5. Mitglied in der Band. Im März erscheint die Top-Auskopplung 'The Caterpillar' / 'Happy The Man' / 'Throw Your Foot' samt Video, für das Pope keine Schmetterlinge auftreiben konnte, da es um diese Zeit nur Raupen gab. The Cure tourt die nächsten zwei Monate durch England und den Kontinent, während Robert seinen Job bei den Banshees kündigt. Sein Arzt verordnet ihm sogar eine Kur, die er mit Mary in Wales verbringt.
In his new apartment in London, Robert listens through 160 Tapes of old Cure-concerts and decides to release the live-album 'Concert' with 'Curiosity - Cure Anomalies 77-84' on the b-side. One month later begins the tour through new zealand, Australia, Japan, Canada and the USA; for drummer Andy Anderson it ends in Tokio, after repeatedly something snapped in him, and his room got kept under surveillance by the police.
In seiner neuen Londoner Wohnung hört er 160 Tapes alter Cure-Konzerte durch und beschließt, das Live-Album 'Concert' mit 'Curiosity - Cure Anomalies 77-84' auf der B-Seite herauszubringen. Einen Monat später beginnt die Tour über Neuseeland, Australien, Japan, Kanada und die USA, die für Drummer Andy Anderson in Tokio endet, nachdem er wiederholt ausgerastet ist und sein Zimmer von Polizisten bewacht wird.
For 11 concerts Vince Ely from the Psychedelic Furs is able to stand in, till the search for an replacement ends with Boris Williams. He learns the songs in plane and during the sound-checks, so well that he becoms a permanent member of The Cure and leaves the 'Thompson Twins'. During the tour Robert gives up drinking and instead discusses the bible with Phil. Back in England he talks things out with Simon, and 'cause Phil doesn't want to bind himself any longer due to own projects, invites Simon to participate in demo-recordings. 'Cause the Fools Dance mini-LP 'Priesthole' isn't very successful, he soon is back in The Cure.
Für 11 Konzerte kann Vince Ely von den Psychedelic Furs einspringen, bis die Ersatz-Suche mit Boris Williams ein Ende hat. Er lernt die Songs im Flugzeug und während der Sound-Checks so gut, daß er fest aufgenommen wird und dafür die 'Thompson Twins' verläßt. Robert gibt während der Tour das Trinken auf und diskutiert stattdessen mit Phil die Bibel. Zurück in England spricht er sich mit Simon aus, und da Phil sich wegen eigener Projekte nicht mehr binden will, lädt er ihn ein, bei Demo-Aufnahmen mitzuspielen. Da Fools Dance mit der Mini-LP 'Priesthole' kaum Erfolg hat, ist er bald zurück bei The Cure.
