To forestall Polydor releasing a 'best of', Robert decides to publish a singles-collection, and works with Tim Pope on a video-collection. Inspired by this, he records a new version of 'Boys Don't Cry', the 'New Voice Club Mix', with 'Pillbox Tales' and 'Do The Hansa' from Easy Cure era. For the video he even ropes in Michael Dempsey, although the original trio is only visible as shadows behind three little boys. During a TV-appearance in France Porl and Boris are in vacation, and Lol's flat mate Martin stands in. That's how Robert explains why all band members wear the same clothes: Who's in the band this week? Ah - he must be it, he wears the suit.
Um Polydor zuvorzukommen, beschließt Robert, eine Singles-Collection herauszubringen, und arbeitet mit Tim Pope an einer Video-Sammlung. Davon angeregt nimmt er eine neue Version von 'Boys Don't Cry' auf, den 'New Voice Club Mix', mit 'Pillbox Tales' und 'Do The Hansa' aus Easy Cure-Zeiten. Für das Video wird gar Michael Dempsey eingespannt, obwohl das Original-Trio nur als Schatten hinter drei kleinen Jungen zu sehen ist. Während eines TV-Auftritts in Frankreich sind Porl und Boris in Urlaub, und Lol's Mitbewohner Martin springt ein. So erklärt Robert, weshalb alle Bandmitglieder die selbe Kleidung tragen: Wer ist diese Woche in der Band? Ah - er muß es sein, er hat den Anzug an.
On April 25th is Cure the top artist of a benefic week for Greenpeace. For the first time for years they play 'Faith', and Robert leaves the stage crying: I wish, everything I did had such an intensive effect on me. The Record Mirror writes: They made the Albert Hall moving... Queen Victoria would turn in her grave! The singles-collection is published in May as 'Standing On A Beach' on LP and MC, and as 'Staring At The Sea' on CD and video - both titles come from 'Killing An Arab'. Videos are made subsequent for the first three singles, and some private videos are added to the collection, p.e. of a show in Crawley in 1976. Robert tells the East Village Eye: "I think it (the video) is one of the best things we ever did, 'cause we're really normal. Nothing is dressed up or glamorous. We look completely foolish." He flies for some interviews in the states, to promote the album and the upcoming tour.
Am 25. April ist Cure der Topact einer Benefiz-Woche für Greenpeace. Zum ersten Mal seit Jahren spielen sie 'Faith', und Robert verläßt weinend die Bühne: Ich wünschte, alles was ich gemacht habe, hätte so eine starke Wirkung auf mich. Der Record Mirror schreibt: Sie brachten die Albert Hall in Bewegung... Queen Victoria muß im Grabe rotieren! Die Singles-Collection erscheint im Mai als 'Standing On A Beach' auf LP und MC, Video und CD als 'Staring At The Sea' - beide Titel stammen aus 'Killing An Arab'. Die ersten 3 Singles werden dafür nachträglich verfilmt und einige private Videos hinzugefügt, z.B. von einem 76er Auftritt in Crawley. Robert erzählt dem East Village Eye: "Ich denke, es (das Video) ist eins der besten Dinge, die wir je gemacht haben, weil wir darin wirklich normal sind. Es ist nichts herausgeputzt oder glamourös. Wir sehen völlig albern aus." Er fliegt für einige Interviews nach Amerika, um das Album und die kommende Tour zu promoten.
The trip by train to a gig in Verona turns to vacations, 'cause the fire service cancels the event. In british newspapers appear articles about the bandmembers and their girlfriends, with photos of the journey in the Orient Express. Before The Cure leaves for America, they play on festivals in Nürnberg, Munich and Glastonbury. Robert can't tell why the band is more popular than five years ago: "Maybe our music is more accessible. Maybe we do better music. Maybe it's just because people think we're funny." And: "I wouldn't want to do anything different... I had to change people's idea of The Cure with 'Let's Go To Bed'. I don't want to be a martyr like Ian Curtis." Because so many fans imitate his look, he radically destroys his cult-hairstyle. The tour ends in a disaster: At the last gig in Los Angeles, a lovesick fan tries to kill himself.
Als die Band mit dem Zug zu einem Gig nach Verona fährt, wird daraus ein Urlaub, als die Feuerwehr die Veranstaltung absagt. In den britischen Tageszeitungen erscheinen Artikel über die Band und ihre Freundinnen, mit Fotos der Fahrt im Orient Express. Bevor The Cure nach Amerika aufbricht, spielen sie noch auf Festivals in Nürnberg, München und Glastonbury. Robert weiß nicht, weshalb die Band beliebter ist als vor fünf Jahren: "Vielleicht ist unsere Musik zugänglicher. Vielleicht machen wir bessere Musik. Vielleicht ist es einfach, weil die Leute uns lustig finden." Und: "Nichts, was wir getan haben, würde ich anders machen wollen... Ich mußte mit 'Let's Go To Bed' die Vorstellung ändern, die die Leute von The Cure hatten. Ich will kein Märtyrer wie Ian Curtis sein." Weil so viele Fans sein Aussehen imitieren, zerstört er radikal seine Kultfrisur. Die Tour endet in einem Desaster, als sich beim letzten Auftritt in Los Angeles ein liebeskranker Fan umzubringen versucht.
In August the concert-movie 'The Cure In Orange' is created in the amphitheater in the french city of the same name, directed as usual by Tim Pope, 'cause no other director knows the band so well. The attempt to make holidays in Toulon fails, because the local newspaper report about it daily, and the hotel is besieged. The band retreats into studio and works on demo-tapes. For the first time everyone contributes with tapes, which are rated in group. In the three months The Cure spends in Studio Miraval in southern France, so many songs are done that they become a double-album with the working-title 'One Million Virgins'. Robert experiments with his voice to sound like a gospel-singer in 'Hot Hot Hot' and like a psychopath in 'Snakepit'. To finally not be called darkwave anymore, The Cure appear in french TV in women-clothes. In a bar on the bahamas, where the band is mixing the album with assistance of Dave Allen, they find a saxophone-player and drag him into the studio, where he records the sax-parts of 'Hey You' and 'Icing Sugar' at the first try.

Der Versuch, Urlaub in Toulon zu machen hingegen scheitert, weil die Lokalzeitung täglich darüber berichtet und das Hotel belagert ist. Die Band zieht sich in's Studio zurück und arbeitet an Demo-Aufnahmen. Zum ersten Mal steuern alle Tapes bei, die gemeinsam bewertet werden. In den 3 Monaten, die The Cure im südfranzösischen Studio Miraval verbringen, entstehen so viele Songs, daß dabei ein Doppelalbum mit dem Arbeitstitel 'One Million Virgins' herauskommt. Robert experimentiert mit seiner Stimme, um bei 'Hot Hot Hot' wie ein Gospel-Sänger und bei 'Snakepit' wie ein Psychopath zu klingen. Um endlich nicht mehr als Grufties bezeichnet zu werden, treten The Cure im französischen Fernsehen in Frauenkleidung auf. In einer Bar auf den Bahamas, wo die Band mit Dave Allen das Album abmischt, treiben sie einen Saxophonspieler auf und schleppen ihn in's Studio, wo er gleich beim ersten Versuch die Sax-Parts von 'Hey You' und 'Icing Sugar' aufnimmt.
